Capturing Variety In Your Boudoir Session

Last summer, I launched the boudoir division of my photography business. I had a party, showcased some of my work and created a space that was positive and inviting for women—the same feel I want them to have when they experience their own session. Boudoir is my favorite style of photography to shoot, and I hope to have the majority of my clients come to me for boudoir by the end of 2017.

Now, if you didn’t notice, variety is in the title of this blog post. It is also the spice of life! And it also keeps life from getting boring. Personally, I love variety, and want to be able to leave myself open to creating amazing and unique photo shoots that are customized for the individual woman I am photographing.

For this post, I wanted to share with you, the variety captured in a specific boudoir photography session I did for the winner of my boudoir giveaway at the launch party. She won a boudoir photography session complete with professional hair and makeup. I was so excited to let her know she won, as she was talking to me at the party about really wanting to do this.

At the last minute, the location she planned on using fell through, and we needed a place to shoot! I offered to use my home, as that is what was available at the moment, and we were in need of a location.

Now, my house is small, and dark— the opposite of a photographers dream studio. But I used what was available to me and came up with some ideas to create the variety I strive for. We got the 90’s rap bumpin’ and flowed through the shoot using some of her ideas, mixed with mine, and of course, the amazing black boots! Those puppies needed a photo shoot of their own— so sexy!

Those sexy black boots!

Sometimes using what you’ve got and pulling the resources already available to you at the moment, makes for a success. It sure doesn’t hurt to have an amazing client and makeup artist to work with either.

I usually like to create at least 3 sets for one session and play around with outfits and posing for each. I shoot the details, capture emotion and expression, and change up my gear to achieve a variety of sexy and classy images that will always have you looking back on the experience and saying, “Daaaammnn!!”

Sonoma County Vintage Boudoir Session

There’s something beautiful, soft, and sensual about a woman and her coffee in the morning. No, really! Just listen to where I’m going with this.. If you are a woman who loves her coffee like I do, then you know the true love and appreciation that goes with each sip! It’s a moment you can relax and reflect on the day ahead.. a moment that is yours to enjoy. Well… for most of us!

You could be sporting a t-shirt with messy hair, sitting in bed, or be all done up with a vintage nighty, sitting on an old trunk outside. It’s the relationship between the woman and the beverage that makes it sexy. In this session I decided to go with the latter and combine a woman’s love for coffee with an outdoor vintage boudoir vibe, early in the morning.

vintage_morning-1

The first location I chose was out in the fields of Sebastopol, CA with the morning sun shining behind her. It was cold and still a bit foggy, but my model was very into it and quite a trooper!

I had her sit on an old vintage trunk, sipping steamy coffee from her cute little teacup. Her hair and makeup had a great early 20th century vibe that went well with the theme.

The second location was another area near the Laguna Trail in Santa Rosa. The fog was starting to lift, offering beautiful lighting. We used an old suitcase as a prop for her to sit on and took some more shots of her enjoying a cup of coffee.

I really loved how these images turned out. Shooting boudoir is such a rewarding type of photography for me. When I get to combine that with my love for the outdoors, I am in a photographers heaven!

But what kind of experience does outdoor boudoir offer my client? Let’s just say… it’s amazeballs!

Not only do you get to be pampered and celebrate yourself, but you also get the opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and feel alive and beautiful!

Shedding your inhibitions in front of the lens is very empowering and exhilarating – no doubt about it. Take that experience outdoors and you have an experience that leaves you feeling proud, excited, and liberated in a way that you will never forget!

I look forward to more outdoor boudoir sessions in beautiful Sonoma County and it’s surrounding areas. Combining the natural beauty that comes from both, women and nature, is my favorite type of photography.

It can raw, powerful, soft , sexy, silly, or romantic. But, no matter what, it will be beautiful..

And it could be you!

Family Beach Session ~ Sonoma County Coast

I have to say, I really enjoyed this photography session! The beach is one of my favorite places and the family I was capturing, are dear to my heart.

My close friend Renee and her two awesome kids took a trip out to the beach on a Fall afternoon. The weather was perfect, the winds bearable and light. The sun and time of day provided that nice golden light.

When we first got out of the car, her son got pooped on by a seagull. Poor guy! He handled it well though because he’s awesome like that! We carried on and got a few images at the top of the hill. We made our way to the beach and had a fun time throughout the session, getting great color contrast from her good outfit choices and the neutral tones of the natural environment.

The Bicycle Dress

Beautiful image of this model wearing the dress.. Doesn't she sell it well?!

Beautiful image of this model wearing the dress.. Doesn’t she sell it well?!

Have you ever come across a piece of clothing and just fell in love it with it? Like, actually have it show up in your dreams and keep thinking about it? For me, this is not typical. Like most women, I have a hard time choosing clothes I feel “reflect” my style and also fit me well.

But a few years ago, I came across this dress that just caught my eye. I saw it in a catalog and wanted it immediately! Maybe because the model looked so happy and relaxed, laying there on the beach in this adorable dress. Regardless, I loved the style and loved the print and really wanted it.
All of this is a bit out of character for me. I like clothes and style, don’t get me wrong. But, for some reason, this dress had an immediate impact on me and I couldn’t get it off my mind! I searched the web to find a better price, since I felt it was a little out of my budget for a “dress”. Then I dreamt about it. Then a week later I happened to be shopping with a friend nearby the store that sold the dress..

After some encouragement from my friend, I decided to try the dress on. I had the money in my pocket so I decided if it fits right, I’m pulling the trigger and buying it! When I put the dress on I discovered it had pockets! What?! Adorable and practical? Right up my alley! Needles to say, I purchased the dress and didn’t look back.

A few months later I saw Zooey Deschanel wearing the same dress on her television show. I’m a fan of her and her style so I thought that was pretty awesome. She’s always wearing cute clothes that I would be too afraid to wear in fear that I will be judged.

Zooey in the dress on her TV show.

Zooey in the dress on her TV show.

Well a lot has happened since I bought that dress! Some life changing events that gave me a different perspective on life, shook my self-confidence, and made me really think about who I am and what’s important.

So, with my confidence still needing some work and still holding on to the fear of being judged, a few weeks ago, I decided to wear the dress to an event I was attending by myself. (I know, brave right?!)

The person I was that day could care less if anyone didn’t like my dress! Because I LIKED IT!! I wasn’t wearing it for compliments or to get noticed. I was wearing it because it made me feel good, happy, and pretty.

That day I decided to let go of the self-doubt, let go of the fear of being judged, and just be me. How liberating — and gratifying! Who knew just being unapologetically you could feel so good!

As a boudoir photographer, I get the pleasure of helping other women with the letting go. When my client decides to rid herself of the self doubt and fear, and just enjoy being herself, it’s the most rewarding experience! It didn’t take me long to see the value in these sessions and want to offer it to all the women around me.

So my advice to you is the next time you are concerned about whether or not someone will like your style, let that shit go.. and just wear the damn dress!

5 Most Common Reasons Women Put Off a Boudoir Session…Or Even Laugh At The Idea!

I’m glad to be finally be touching on this subject for a couple of reasons! For one, I get to inform women that their insecurities and setbacks can become the driving force and success of their shoot. For Two, I get to show that they are not alone and inform them on some common concerns most women have.

I truly believe that our experiences and influences make us who we are, therefore, there cannot be another you.. and there is beauty in that alone. We need to make it a priority to love and see ourselves for the wonderful women that we are. Here are the top 5 excuses women put off a boudoir session or disregard themselves as a candidate all together:

It's time to kick up your heels and have some fun! Celebrate YOU!

It’s time to kick up your heels and have some fun! Celebrate YOU!

  1. “I Need To Lose Weight First” — This is definitely number one so might as well get this out of the way. Most women are really concerned with not looking good in their photos, regardless of their size and weight. But self confidence, correct posing, and lighting is what really makes a photograph. Not 5 or 10 pounds. I believe each woman possesses a unique beauty that she can embrace and be proud of. And I believe she should capture that at least once in her life by having a photo session.
  2.

  3. “I’m Too __________” — Go ahead, fill in the blank. No matter what you will have said, it’s simply not true. And it’s talking down to yourself. I could have listed 10 excuses woman make, but I decided to knock off several with just this one! There is no age or weight limit, relationship requirement, or certain level of confidence needed. You can be a 65 year old woman wanting to celebrate feeling the best in her life, or a 35 year old woman wanting to reclaim her femininity after a breakup. Boudoir is about the woman. Her femininity. Her strength. And capturing that in her images. Think about what you would say to your friend if she were considering this memorable experience and apply that to yourself. This is where your self-love comes into play!
  4.

  5. “Sexy Lingerie And Garters Are Just Not My Style” — There is definitely a common visual most people get when they think of boudoir. It’s something usually including lingerie, and a woman on a bed. Boudoir shoots can be classy, funny, nerdy, sexy, retro, or vintage themed. Outfits range anywhere from lingerie and underwear, to t-shirt and jeans or a cozy oversized sweater. My point here is that if you saw a photograph of a woman on the beach looking confidently out at sea, she can look just as sexy as a woman laying on a bed in her underwear. The key is creating a custom shoot that fits the woman, her place in life, and is at her comfort level.
  6.

  7. “Everyone Will See My Pictures” — Absolutely not true. Any images posted on my website or social media sites were approved by the client. You have control over which images are available for viewing on the web, which images are only for in-house portfolio, and which images are off limits to others. I do all my own retouching and prints in-house, offering full privacy to my clients. All other products are ordered through reputable and professional labs.
  8.

  9. “I’m Awkward In Front Of The Camera And Don’t Feel Super Confident About Myself”
–This is a big one- and not uncommon for anyone, really. And it’s not a problem. This is where my expertise comes in! The right photographer can take amazing photos of ANY woman no matter her shape or size. I coach each client throughout their entire photo shoot, taking the pressure off needing to know how to “look or act in front of the camera”.

When you consider the most common set backs and excuses, there is a pattern. Self doubt. When you book a boudoir shoot and start planning your session there is excitement and nerves. And when you show up and give it all you got, those nerves make you feel alive and sexy, and the bravery of it all gives you an empowered feeling that results in you having a successful shoot that leaves you more confident, alive, and amazing than you were prepared for!

And that is why I love boudoir photography. To be able to help someone with their self- confidence and show them a side of themselves they’ve never seen.

Shooting My Very First Boudoir Session

boudoir
I wanted to share with you, my first experience shooting a boudoir style session and how I felt it was right for me. For a long time, the idea of being a boudoir photographer floated in the back of my mind. After much research and a few pep talks, I was ready to give it a try.

I have an amazing friend who trusted me to photograph her and we were both excited and nervous to do the session. I showed up at her place and she was ready, hair and makeup done to the nines! We had planned to shoot the session in her bedroom and we already had a few outfits planned.

When I went to set up, her bedroom was quite dark! I didn’t want to cancel the session so I knew I had to get creative. I quickly scanned her home to find another space that would work well and would offer me good light.

The room with the most light ended up being her child’s bedroom! She helped me set up a backdrop and move things around to make the space work. The more restrictions there were, the more my creativity had to come into play. This challenge was exciting on my end and I had my own confidence being built up throughout the shoot that I was not even expecting! I was so concentrated on making my friend feel comfortable, that I forgot about my nerves. She said her nerves slipped away quickly too and she was really enjoying the experience.

End result? We both had a great time and got some awesome shots, two are shown in this blog.

She found the experience to be exciting, empowering, and fun! She felt alive and beautiful and was interested in doing it again! I found it to be incredibly satisfying to offer her this experience and had a ton of fun doing it!

boudoirTHEN IT GOT BETTER.. After going through the images, and doing some slight retouching, we sat down and went through them together. She was happy.. she smiled.

She felt good about herself, she had more confidence in herself, and more love for herself!

I knew this was a style of photography that was here to stay with me. I am very excited to be pursuing my career in boudoir photography and making a positive change in women’s lives!

If you are interested in boudoir, but don’t think you are a candidate..stay tuned! I will soon be sharing the most common excuses women use for not being ready for a boudoir shoot and a few good reasons why you should book one now!

Much Love, Karen

The Gift of A Smile

When I first decided to make photography a business for myself and not just a hobby, I had a recurring idea that boudoir was going to be my passion and favorite style to shoot.

Coming from a career that made a positive difference in peoples lives, I wanted to continue that in my own business. For nearly a decade I worked as an orthodontic assistant, improving peoples smiles and giving them a level of confidence they once didn’t have. My love for photography and wanting to make a positive difference in peoples lives come together when I have a boudoir client. The self-confidence and self-appreciation that my client receives during a boudoir session is similar-they leave feeling better and more confident about themselves.

Kaiti-23

I decided that I would first try all genres of photography and have an open mind to the experiences that each style brought to the table. From a wedding and engagement sessions to family, child, and newborn sessions, I kept shooting boudoir throughout, not losing that as my true passion or focus along the way. I found all sessions to be a joy, each in their own way.

When I can make a child excited to get their picture taken, or get a boy to not find the experience as daunting as he thought, I also get great pleasure in a photo shoot. When I can capture a couple in love, or a senior that is beaming of their success, it is such a joy- for me and for them!

So after a year of amazing sessions, I have learned these three things:

  1. I enjoy making people smile.
  2. Boudoir photography is my passion.
  3. I like variety and will keep doing portrait photography while focusing on boudoir.

I look forward to all the fun, silly, adventurous, and beautiful images that I will create with my clients this year!

With A Smile,

Karen
